What is ARTSPARK! 2009?
ARTSPARK 2009 is a major public festival to be held in South Berkeley on September 19, 2009, for the purpose of strengthening and empowering the South and West Berkeley neighborhoods through the arts. In a festival atmosphere, with entertainment, food, music and games, residents of all ages, and backgrounds will engage with experienced artists to make art, and choose collective ongoing projects they would like to work on. The full spectrum of community arts are welcome -- mural painting, dance, spoken word, drama, photography, videography, music, tile making, sculpture, clowning, juggling, collage, etc.
Who are the Producers of ARTSPARK! 2009?
The festival is conceived and produced by a group of South and West Berkeley residents and nonprofit community agencies, led by the Community Action Team – a volunteer group of activists formed in 2000 to improve the health of these neighborhoods. Major help has come from the City of Berkeley, nonprofit groups, and commercial businesses serving the area.
Who will be the festival attendees?
South and West Berkeley are multi-cultural, multi-racial neighborhoods comprising all ages and many occupations and life styles. There is no “typical resident,” but many face serious challenges in seeking adequate health, public safety, education, income, employment, housing, recreation, and social support.
What artists will participate and how?
Local Bay Area artists of all kinds with successful experience in community projects are invited to bring their skills, in order to interact hands-on with festival attendees, giving them a taste of what it is like to create a particular form of community art. Mural painters may engage people in painting banners or posters; dancers may teach choreography; poets may get people reciting their own short works; videographers may help people shoot, view, and edit their own footage; drama coaches may organize short performances – all with the intent of showing the fun and pride of making art, igniting the creative urge, and planting a vision of how life can be enhanced through art.
How will artists be compensated?
Each invited artist will receive a $200 stipend for materials and participation during the festival, as well as the chance to be named in proposals for ongoing project funding.
