Dia de los Muertos - day of the dead - in Berkeley

Papier Mâché Mask Contest

CALL FOR ARTISTS - September 2009

This fall, at a time of year when the veil between the living and dead is thought to be at its most diaphanous, the North Shattuck Association will hold a contest for giant papier mâché skeleton heads to be worn by the artists in a sidewalk, candlelight procession for Dia de los Muertos. First place prize is $300. Runners up will receive gift certificates from local merchants.

Giant papier mâché skeleton heads in Mexico are a traditional means of celebrating holidays and are created to represent many different types of people and professions. They have been created for other events, but not necessarily Dia de los Muertos and are sometimes called Mojiganga puppets. We are looking for a combination of these types of puppets with Dia de los Muertos characters.

Artists who would like to enter a head are asked to wear it to Grace North Church, 2138 Cedar St. at Vine, Berkeley, CA at 6PM on Friday, October 30. The judging will take place outside on the steps at that time. Judges are Suzanne Tan, Berkeley Art Center; Lisah Horner, ACCI Gallery; Heather Hensley, North Shattuck Assn.; and Lisa Bullwinkel, Another Bullwinkel Show.

Day of the Dead Celebration Procession

Artists, including children, and others wearing masks may join the procession and will then proceed through the North Shattuck District for about an hour. Local restaurants will create special Dia de los Muertos menu items for the evening, so all are encouraged to stay in the district for dinner. The papier mâché skeleton heads may be left at the Church to be put on display until Nov. 7 during the Green Funeral Fair (www.gracenorthchurch.org).
